Experience on 3D Silicon Sensors for ATLAS IBL / Darbo, G (INFN)
3D silicon sensors, where plasma micro-machining is used to etch deep narrow apertures in the silicon substrate to form electrodes of PIN junctions, represent possible solutions for inner pixel layers of the tracking detectors in high energy physics experiments. This type of sensors has been developed for the Insertable B-Layer (IBL), an additional pixel layer that has been installed in ATLAS during the present shutdown of the LHC collider at CERN. [...]

Elastic anisotropy in multifilament Nb3Sn superconducting wires / Scheuerlein, C ; Fedelich, B ; Alknes, P ; Arnau, G ; Bjoerstad, R ; Bordini, B
The elastic anisotropy caused by the texture in the Nb3Sn filaments of PIT and RRP wires has been calculated by averaging the estimates of Voigt and Reuss, using published Nb3Sn single crystal elastic constants and the Nb3Sn grain orientation distribution determined in both wire types by Electron Backscatter Diffraction. At ambient temperature the calculated Nb3Sn E-moduli in axial direction in the PIT and the RRP wire are 130 GPa and 140 GPa, respectively. [...]

Coupling Current and Hysteresis Losses of Bi2212 Round Wires with Twisted Filaments / Yang, I (-) ; Pelegrin, J (-) ; Young, EA (-) ; Falorio, I (-) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Miao, H (-) ; Huang, Y (-)
AC loss measurements have been carried out on Bi2212 round wires of different twist pitches. With systematical variation of sample temperature (5 K – 70 K) and ac field amplitude (≤0.2 T) as well as frequency (20 Hz – 2 kHz), this work shows (a) the full coupling of the non-twisted wire, (b) the uncoupling of sub-wires by twisting at moderate pitch up to 12 mm, (c) a relatively short time constant of milliseconds for the coupling current due to a high transverse resistivity, and (d) an effective (de)coupling diameter of 0.4mm about 1.6x of sub-wire bundles. Granular solid targets made of fluidized tungsten powder or static pebble bed of tungsten spheres, have been long proposed and are being studied as an alternative configurations towards high-power (>1MW of beam power) target systems, suitable for a future Super Beam or Neutrino Factory. Serving the lack of experimental data on this field, a feasibility experiment was performed in HiRadMat facility of CERN/SPS that tried in a pulse-by-pulse basis to address the effect of the impact of the SPS beam (440GeV/c) on a static tungsten powder target.
