The performance of the muon identification in LHCb is extracted from data using muons and hadrons produced in $J/\psi \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, $\Lambda ^0 \to p\pi^-$ and $D^{\star +} \to \pi^+ D^0(K^- \pi^+)$ decays.
