In spring 2012 there was a long-awaited progress in CERN Fitness club. We have officially opened a Powerlifting @ CERN, and the number of members of the new section has been increasing since then reaching 70+ people in less than 4 months.

Powerlifting is a strength sport, which is simple as 1-2-3 and efficient. The "1-2-3" are the three basic lifts (bench press, squat and deadlift) which involve most muscles of your body. For men the essence of the powerlifting training is "don't look strong, be strong", for women the strength training combined with general fitness classes is an effective calories-burning activity as this combination boosts the metabolism. Tools (free weights and "the big three" lifts) don't change, but weights and number of sets and repetitions do change a lot, thus redefining a strength conditioning strategy depending on your needs. Powerlifting as a sport requires many things, including physical strength, speed, stamina, and skill.

The Powerlifting & Benchpress seminar of Honoured Coach of Russia*, Askold Surovetsky was held in CERN powerlifting gym thanks to the strong support from Fitness Club CERN and the "Golden Tiger" Strength Festival (Ekaterinburg, Russia, 6-7 October 2012). The "Honoured Coach of Russia" title is awarded to those who trained world champions / record holders, so that was a rare opportunity to learn from the best. With participants from Hong Kong, India, Hungary, Sweden, Ukraine, Russia the seminar was a truly international event.

The 2-day program covered general "strength development" and specific theory (yes, sport is a science in it's own way) and practice, and participants were split in two groups so that everyone got guidelines from the coach himself. Needless to say, what matters for this kind of events are two things -- whether people liked the event and whether they will be able to improve themselves using the knowledge obtained.

For the first part, the answer is yes -- it was great to see eyes full of interest and to hear all those many questions people had been asking for many hours after the seminar. I've got only positive
feedback, and the most detailed from someone who, according to Surovetsky, has really good chances to succeed in international powerlifting competitions, János Karancsi: Feedback from one of the participants of the seminar, János Karancsi: "The seminar was круто (ru: "cool"). :D My squats and deadlifts feel so much lighter and I have less back pain. I feel so much stronger since I'm using Askold's techniques. I always value the words of elder professionals, because they can explain things simply and accurately, in a much better way than anybody else. It is because they went through a long process of trial and error and I don't have to do that. I really benefited from
this and I use the techniques exactly as I was instructed."

For the second part, only time will tell. Anyhow, we have a high quality professional equipment and advanced knowledge in strength training, and we will be happy to share this with you - join the club, and explore your potential!
