Generating a barrier bucket to deplete the longitudinal line density of the coasting beam during the kicker rise time can reduce these losses. The use of a bent crystal was investigated in order to reduce the losses at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) electrostatic septum (ZS) during the slow extraction of 400 GeV/c protons toward the North Area. Extensive studies were carried out to estimate the mismatch from single-pass measurements in the transfer line and to rematch the transfer line to reduce the dispersive mismatch at PS injection while keeping the betatron matching unaltered.
