A torsion balance for probing a non-standard force in the sub-micrometre range / Masuda, M ; Sasaki, M ; Araya, A
We report the performance of an instrument that employs a torsion balance for probing a non-standard force in the sub-micrometre range. High sensitivity is achieved by using a torsion balance that has a long torsional period, strong magnetic damping of all vibrational motions and a feedback system that employs an optical lever. [...]

Wetting morphologies on randomly oriented fibers / Sauret, Alban ; Boulogne, François ; Soh, Beatrice ; Dressaire, Emilie ; Stone, Howard A
We characterize the different morphologies adopted by a drop of liquid placed on two randomly oriented fibers, which is a first step toward understanding the wetting of fibrous networks. The present work reviews previous modeling for parallel and touching crossed fibers and extends it to an arbitrary orientation of the fibers characterized by the tilting angle and the minimum spacing distance. [...]

A Dynamical Model of Twitter Activity Profiles / Huynh, Hoai Nguyen ; Legara, Erika Fille ; Monterola, Christopher
The advent of the era of Big Data has allowed many researchers to dig into various socio-technical systems, including social media platforms. In particular, these systems have provided them with certain verifiable means to look into certain aspects of human behavior. [...]

Deviations from reversible dynamics in a qubit-oscillator system coupled to a very small environment / Vidiella-Barranco, A
In this contribution it is considered a simple and solvable model consisting of a qubit in interaction with an oscillator exposed to a very small "environment" (a second qubit). An isolated qubit-oscillator system having the oscillator initially in one of its energy eigenstates exhibits Rabi oscillations, an evidence of coherent quantum behaviour. [...]

The Distribution and Chemistry of H$_2$CO in the DM Tau Protoplanetary Disk / Loomis, Ryan A ; Cleeves, L Ilsedore ; Öberg, Karin I ; Guzman, Viviana V ; Andrews, Sean M
H$_2$CO ice on dust grains is an important precursor of complex organic molecules (COMs). H$_2$CO gas can be readily observed in protoplanetary disks and may be used to trace COM chemistry. [...]

Probing equilibrium glass flow up to exapoise viscosities / Pogna, E A A ; Rodríguez-Tinoco, C ; Cerullo, G ; Ferrante, C ; Rodríguez-Viejo, J ; Scopigno, T
Glasses are out-of-equilibrium systems aging under the crystallization threat. During ordinary glass formation, the atomic diffusion slows down rendering its experimental investigation impractically long, to the extent that a timescale divergence is taken for granted by many. [...]

Highly Efficient Midinfrared On-Chip Electrical Generation of Graphene Plasmons by Inelastic Electron Tunneling Excitation / Ooi, Kelvin J A ; Chu, Hong Son ; Hsieh, Chang Yu ; Tan, Dawn T H ; Ang, Lay Kee
Inelastic electron tunneling provides a low-energy pathway for the excitation of surface plasmons and light emission. We theoretically investigate tunnel junctions based on metals and graphene. [...]

A review of East Asian reports of aurorae and comets circa AD 775 / Chapman, Jesse (U Berkeley) ; Neuhaeuser, Dagmar (Jena) ; Neuhaeuser, Ralph (U Jena) ; Csikszentmihalyi, Mark (U Berkeley)
Given that a strong 14C variation in AD 775 has recently been suggested to be due to the largest solar flare ever recorded in history, it is relevant to investigate whether celestial events observed around that time may have been aurorae, possibly even very strong aurorae, or otherwise related to the 14C variation (e.g. a suggested comet impact with Earth's atmosphere). Nuclear forces and their impact on neutron-rich nuclei and neutron-rich matter / Hebeler, K ; Holt, J D ; Menendez, J ; Schwenk, A
We review the impact of nuclear forces on matter at neutron-rich extremes. Recent results have shown that neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces, which are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. [...]

Unusual Solar Radio Burst Observed at Decameter Wavelengths / Melnik, V N ; Brazhenko, A I ; Konovalenko, A A ; Rucker, H O ; Frantsuzenko, A V ; Dorovskyy, V V ; Panchenko, M ; Stanislavskyy, A A
An unusual solar burst was observed simultaneously by two decameter radio telescopes UTR-2 (Kharkov, Ukraine) and URAN-2 (Poltava, Ukraine) on 3 June 2011 in the frequency range 16-28 MHz. The observed radio burst has some unusual properties, which are not typical for the other types of solar radio bursts. [...]
