Solar wind turbulence at 0.72 AU and solar minimum / Teodorescu, Eliza ; Echim, Marius ; Munteanu, Costel ; Zhang, Tielong ; Bruno, Roberto ; Kovacs, Peter
We investigate Venus Express (VEX) observations of magnetic field fluctuations performed systematically in the solar wind at 0.72 Astronomical Units (AU), between 2007 and 2009, during the deep minimum of the solar cycle 24. The Power Spectral Densities (PSD) of the magnetic field components have been computed for the time intervals that satisfy data integrity criteria and have been grouped according to the type of wind, fast and slow defined for speeds larger and respectively smaller than 450 km/s. Soliton generation by internal tidal beams impinging on a pycnocline: laboratory experiments / Mercier, Matthieu J (MIT-MECHE, Phys-ENS) ; Mathur, Manikandan (MIT-MECHE, LEGI, LMD) ; Gostiaux, Louis (LEGI) ; Gerkema, Theo (CIMAR) ; Magalhães, Jorge M (CIMAR) ; Da Silva, José C B (CIMAR) ; Dauxois, Thierry (Phys-ENS)
In this paper, we present the first laboratory experiments that show the generation of internal solitary waves by the impingement of a quasi-two-dimensional internal wave beam on a pycnocline. These experiments were inspired by observations of internal solitary waves in the deep ocean from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, where this so-called mechanism of 'local generation' was argued to be at work, here in the form of internal tidal beams hitting the thermocline. Practical thermodynamics of Yukawa systems at strong coupling / Khrapak, Sergey A ; Kryuchkov, Nikita P ; Yurchenko, Stanislav O ; Thomas, Hubertus M
Simple practical approach to estimate thermodynamic properties of strongly coupled Yukawa systems, in both fluid and solid phases, is presented. The accuracy of the approach is tested by extensive comparison with direct computer simulation results (for fluids and solids) and the recently proposed shortest-graph method (for solids). [...]

Impact of environmentally induced fluctuations on quantum mechanically mixed electronic and vibrational pigment states in photosynthetic energy transfer and 2D electronic spectra / Fujihashi, Yuta ; Fleming, Graham R ; Ishizaki, Akihito
Recently, nuclear vibrational contribution signatures in 2D electronic spectroscopy have attracted considerable interest, in particular as regards interpretation of the oscillatory transients observed in light-harvesting complexes. These transients have dephasing times that persist for much longer than theoretically predicted electronic coherence lifetime. [...]

Singular value demodulation of phase-shifted holograms / Lopes, Fernando ; Atlan, Michael
We report on phase-shifted holographic interferogram demodulation by singular value decomposition. Numerical processing of optically-acquired interferograms over several modulation periods was performed in two steps : 1- rendering of off-axis complex-valued holograms by Fresnel transformation of the interferograms; 2- eigenvalue spectrum assessment of the lag-covariance matrix of hologram pixels. [...]

Relation of centroid molecular dynamics and ring-polymer molecular dynamics to exact quantum dynamics / Hele, Timothy J H ; Willatt, Michael J ; Muolo, Andrea ; Althorpe, Stuart C
We recently obtained a quantum-Boltzmann-conserving classical dynamics by making a single change to the derivation of the `Classical Wigner' approximation. Here, we show that the further approximation of this `Matsubara dynamics' gives rise to two popular heuristic methods for treating quantum Boltzmann time-correlation functions: centroid molecular dynamics (CMD) and ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD). Socratic Dialogs and Clicker use in an Upper-Division Mechanics Course / Kuo, H Vincent ; Kohl, Patrick B ; Carr, Lincoln D
The general problem of effectively using interactive engagement in non-introductory physics courses remains open. We present a three-year study comparing different approaches to lecturing in an intermediate mechanics course at the Colorado School of Mines. [...]

Note on the helicity decomposition of spin and orbital optical currents / Aiello, Andrea ; Berry, M V
In the helicity representation, the Poynting vector (current) for a monochromatic optical field, when calculated using either the electric or the magnetic field, separates into right-handed and left-handed contributions, with no cross-helicity contributions. Cross-helicity terms do appear in the orbital and spin contributions to the current. [...]

On the dual-cone nature of the conical refraction phenomenon / Turpin, Alex ; Loiko, Yury V ; Kalkandjiev, Todor K ; Tomizawa, Hiromitsu ; Mompart, Jordi
In conical refraction (CR), a focused Gaussian input beam passing through a biaxial crystal and parallel to one of the optic axes is transformed into a pair of concentric bright rings split by a dark (Poggendorff) ring at the focal plane. Here, we show the generation of a CR transverse pattern that does not present the Poggendorff fine splitting at the focal plane, i.e. [...]

A physical perspective on cytoplasmic streaming (invited) / Goldstein, Raymond E ; van de Meent, Jan-Willem
Organisms show a remarkable range of sizes, yet the dimensions of a single cell rarely exceed $100$ $\mu$m. While the physical and biological origins of this constraint remain poorly understood, exceptions to this rule give valuable insights. [...]
