Ferrell-Berreman modes in plasmonic epsilon-near-zero media / Newman, Ward D ; Cortes, Cristian L ; Atkinson, Jon ; Pramanik, Sandipan ; DeCorby, Raymond G ; Jacob, Zubin
We observe unique absorption resonances in silver/silica multilayer-based epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials that are related to radiative bulk plasmon-polariton states of thin-films originally studied by Ferrell (1958) and Berreman (1963). In the local effective medium, metamaterial descrip- tion, the unique effect of the excitation of these microscopic modes is counterintuitive and captured within the complex propagation constant, not the effective dielectric permittivities. Nonlinear Optics in Doped Silica Glass Integrated Waveguide Structures / Duchesne, David ; Ferrera, Marcello ; Razzari, Luca ; Morandotti, Roberto ; Little, Brent ; Chu, Sai T ; Moss, David J
Integrated photonic technologies are rapidly becoming an important and fundamental milestone for wideband optical telecommunications. Future optical networks have several critical requirements, including low energy consumption, high efficiency, greater bandwidth and flexibility, which must be addressed in a compact form factor..

Accurate Prediction of the Ammonia Probes of a Variable Proton-to-Electron Mass Ratio / Owens, Alec ; Yurchenko, Sergei N ; Thiel, Walter ; Špirko, Vladimir
A comprehensive study of the mass sensitivity of the vibration-rotation-inversion transitions of $^{14}$NH$_3$, $^{15}$NH$_3$, $^{14}$ND$_3$, and $^{15}$ND$_3$ is carried out variationally using the TROVE approach. Variational calculations are robust and accurate, offering a new way to compute sensitivity coefficients. [...]

A Conformational Search Method for Protein Systems Using Genetic Crossover and Metropolis Criterion / Sakae, Yoshitake (Nagoya University) ; Hiroyasu, Tomoyuki (Doshisha University) ; Miki, Mitsunori (Doshisha University) ; Ishii, Katsuya (Nagoya University) ; Okamoto, Yuko (Nagoya University)
Many proteins carry out their biological functions by forming the characteristic tertiary structures. Therefore, the search of the stable states of proteins by molecular simulations is important to understand their functions and stabilities. [...]

Holographic microscopy reconstruction in both object and image half spaces with undistorted 3D grid / Verrier, Nicolas (UMR 5221 CNRS-UM2) ; Alexandre, Danier (UMR 5221 CNRS-UM2) ; Tessier, Gilles (Institut Langevin - Ondes et Images) ; Gross, Michel (UMR 5221 CNRS-UM2)
We propose a holographic microscopy reconstruction method, which propagates the hologram, in the object half space, in the vicinity of the object. The calibration yields reconstructions with an undistorted reconstruction grid i.e. [...]

Is Magnetic Topology Important for Heating the Solar Atmosphere? / Parnell, C E ; Stevenson, J E H ; Threlfall, J ; Edwards, S J
Magnetic fields permeate the entire solar atmosphere weaving an extremely complex pattern on both local and global scales. In order to understand the nature of this tangled web of magnetic fields, its magnetic skeleton, which forms the boundaries between topologically distinct flux domains, may be determined. [...]

On the Collective Magnetic Field Strength and Vector Structure of Dark Umbral Cores Measured by the Hinode Spectropolarimeter / Schad, T A
We study 7530 sunspot umbrae and pores measured by the Hinode Spectropolarimeter (SP) between November 2006 and November 2012. We primarily seek confirmation of the long term secular decrease in the mean magnetic field strength of sunspot umbrae found by Penn and Livingston (2011, IAU Symp. [...]

Solar wind turbulence at 0.72 AU and solar minimum / Teodorescu, Eliza ; Echim, Marius ; Munteanu, Costel ; Zhang, Tielong ; Bruno, Roberto ; Kovacs, Peter
We investigate Venus Express (VEX) observations of magnetic field fluctuations performed systematically in the solar wind at 0.72 Astronomical Units (AU), between 2007 and 2009, during the deep minimum of the solar cycle 24. The Power Spectral Densities (PSD) of the magnetic field components have been computed for the time intervals that satisfy data integrity criteria and have been grouped according to the type of wind, fast and slow defined for speeds larger and respectively smaller than 450 km/s. Soliton generation by internal tidal beams impinging on a pycnocline: laboratory experiments / Mercier, Matthieu J (MIT-MECHE, Phys-ENS) ; Mathur, Manikandan (MIT-MECHE, LEGI, LMD) ; Gostiaux, Louis (LEGI) ; Gerkema, Theo (CIMAR) ; Magalhães, Jorge M (CIMAR) ; Da Silva, José C B (CIMAR) ; Dauxois, Thierry (Phys-ENS)
In this paper, we present the first laboratory experiments that show the generation of internal solitary waves by the impingement of a quasi-two-dimensional internal wave beam on a pycnocline. These experiments were inspired by observations of internal solitary waves in the deep ocean from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, where this so-called mechanism of 'local generation' was argued to be at work, here in the form of internal tidal beams hitting the thermocline.
