Calibration of the T08.XSEC devices by means of Al-foil activation and BCTF measurements / Ravotti, Federico (CERN (EP-DT)) ; Ruffieux, Romain Brice (CERN (SY-BI)) ; Ollacarizqueta, Ana Guerrero (CERN (SY-BI))
The IRRAD/CHARM irradiation facility in the East experimental area exploits a proton beam of standard intensity 5×10^{11} p/spill slow-extracted from the CERN PS accelerator to the T08 beam line over about 400ms. This document summarizes the procedure employed for the calibration of the Secondary Emission Chamber (XSEC) devices of T08 used to monitor the total proton intensity per spill during facility operation. HEV is a low-cost, versatile, high-quality ventilator, which has been designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ventilator is intended to be used both in and out of hospital intensive care units, and for both invasive and non-invasive ventilation. [...]

The HEV Ventilator Proposal / Buytaert, J (CERN) /HEV Collaboration
We propose the design of a ventilator which can be easily manufactured and integrated into the hospital environment to support COVID-19 patients. The unit is designed to support standard ventilator modes of operation, most importantly PRVC (Pressure Regulated Volume Control) and SIMV-PC (Synchronised Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation) modes. [...]

Estimation of the Optical Aging Rate for 1.00 mm Plastic Scintillating Fibre of Type SCSF-78M / Shinji, O (Kuraray Co., Ltd.)
Natural aging, in absence of ionizing radiation, leads to a very slow decrease of the optical transparency in plastic scintillating fibres. This aging phenomenon is attributed to chemical reactions of the fibre core material polystyrene, which can be a photo-reaction by natural light or an oxidation reaction with oxygen diffused in from the surrounding atmosphere. [...]

Oxygen Diffusion in a Polystyrene Optical Fibre Surrounded by an Oxygen Gas Barrier / Shinji, Osamu (Kuraray Co. Ltd.)
In the context of the LHCb SciFi project natural aging of the scintillating plastic fibres was observed. The observed loss of transparency of the fibre is attributed to an oxygenation reaction of polystyrene, the fibre core material. [...]

Elastic stability and HEP detectors: a primer / Wertelaers, P (CERN EP-DT)
Destabilizing -- or "buckling" -- phenomena can compromise the quality of a physics detector long before the point of collapse has been reached. We rehearse on the two types of buckling : snap-through versus bifurcation. [...]

Downward transfer of a sub-cooled cryoliquid / Wertelaers, P (CERN EP-DT)
An alternative is proposed to the traditional transfer of a cryo fluid in gaseous -- and warm -- form, a method of low productivity and high energy cost. In order to prevent the much-feared geysering, focus is on sub-cooling of the liquid, and the safe maintaining of such state all along the journey [...]

Anode wire in cylindrical cathode tube : destabilizing electrostatic force / Wertelaers, P (CERN EP-DT)
A two-dimensional -- cross-sectional -- discussion suffices. The tube is offset, and the electrostatic potential is found analytically with perturbative methods. [...]

Pipe regarded as bending beam : destabilizing transverse effect of internal pressure / Wertelaers, P (CERN EP-DT)
This confusing subject is of distinct importance in case of detectors based on straw tubes. The emphasis is on analytical expressions [...]

Simple-topology switched-mode DC-DC converters : dynamics and control / Wertelaers, P (CERN EP-DT)
After a rehearsal of the functioning mode and characteristics of the buck-boost and buck converters, we attempt to formalize a lower-frequency description of the converter, by smoothing the waveforms containing switching ripple. This framework enables the construction of a linear time-invariant computational model, to which voltage-regulating actions can then be added. [...]
