Here we describe the design and performance of a new water cluster chemical ionization–atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometer (CI-APi-TOF). The instrument selectively measures trace gases with high proton affinity such as ammonia and dimethylamine, which are important for atmospheric new particle formation and growth. [...]

A major fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles, which affect both air quality and climate, form from gaseous precursors in the atmosphere. Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs), formed by oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds, are known to participate in particle formation and growth. [...]

The Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets (CLOUD) experiment aims to recreate atmospheric conditions inside a large chamber where the mechanisms for the formation of aerosol and cloud are studied. Aerosol and cloud are recognized as representing the largest uncertainty in the current understanding of climate change together with the influence of the cosmic rays. [...]

Performance of a corona ion source for measurement of sulfuric acid by chemical ionization mass spectrometry / Kürten, A (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Rondo, L (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Ehrhart, S (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Curtius, J (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main))
The performance of an ion source based on corona discharge has been studied. This source is used for the detection of gaseous sulfuric acid by chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) through the reaction of NO3– ions with H2SO4. [...]

No statistically significant effect of a short-term decrease in the nucleation rate on atmospheric aerosols / Dunne, E M (U. Leeds (main) ; Finnish Meteorological Inst.) ; Lee, L A (U. Leeds (main)) ; Reddington, C L (U. Leeds (main)) ; Carslaw, K S (U. Leeds (main))
Observed correlations between short-term decreases in cosmic ray ionisation and cloud and aerosol properties have been attributed to short-term decreases in the ion-induced nucleation rate. We use a global aerosol microphysics model to determine whether a 10 day reduction of 15% in the nucleation rate could generate a statistically significant response in aerosol concentrations and optical properties. The accurate measurement of the gaseous sulfuric acid concentration is crucial within many fields of atmospheric science. Instruments utilizing chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) measuring H2SO4, therefore, require a careful calibration. [...]

Influence of aerosol lifetime on the interpretation of nucleation experiments with respect to the first nucleation theorem / Ehrhart, S (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Curtius, J (Goethe U., Frankfurt (main))
The SAWNUC (Sulphuric Acid Water NUCleation) microphysical aerosol nucleation model is used to study the effect of reactor walls on the interpretation of nucleation experiments with respect to nucleation theory. This work shows that loss processes, such as wall losses, influence the interpretation of nucleation experiments, especially at low growth rates and short lifetimes of freshly nucleated particles. A new high-transmission inlet for the Caltech nano-RDMA for size distribution measurements of sub-3 nm ions at ambient concentrations / Franchin, Alessandro (Helsinki U.) ; Downard, Andy (Caltech, Pasadena (main)) ; Kangasluoma, Juha (Helsinki U.) ; Nieminen, Tuomo (Helsinki U. ; Helsinki Inst. of Phys. ; UEF, Kuopio) ; Lehtipalo, Katrianne (Helsinki U. ; Airmodus Ltd, Helsinki) ; Steiner, Gerhard (U. Vienna (main) ; Innsbruck U.) ; Manninen, Hanna E (Helsinki U.) ; Petäjä, Tuukka (Helsinki U.) ; Flagan, Richard C (Caltech, Pasadena (main)) ; Kulmala, Markku (Helsinki U.)
Reliable and reproducible measurements of atmospheric aerosol particle number size distributions below 10 nm require optimized classification instruments with high particle transmission efficiency. Almost all differential mobility analyzers (DMAs) have an unfavorable potential gradient at the outlet (e.g., long column, Vienna type) or at the inlet (nano-radial DMA), preventing them from achieving a good transmission efficiency for the smallest nanoparticles.
