Beam-Background Tests with TOTEM Roman Pot Detectors at the LHC Injection Energy / Kašpar, Jan (CERN ; Prague, Inst. Phys.) /TOTEM
With the aim of measuring the total cross-section and the $\rho$ parameter, TOTEM has performed tests of beam conditions at the LHC injection energy of $\sqrt{s} = 900$ GeV. The tests have revealed complications in setting up the LHC collimators to minimise the background observed in the Roman Pot (RP) detectors, summarised in this article. [...]

The projected range of high-intensity proton and heavy-ion beams at energies below a few tens of MeV/A in matter can be as short as a few micrometers. For the evaluation of temperature and stresses from a shallow beam energy deposition in matter conventional numerical 3D models require minuscule element sizes for acceptable element aspect ratio as well as extremely short time steps for numerical convergence. In the past, transverse coherent instabilities have been observed at the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator (HERA) proton ring that were instigated by the presence of linear coupling.
