Beam Intercepting Devices at CERN – Types, Challenges, Design, R&D and Operation / Calviani, Marco (speaker) (CERN)
Beam-intercepting systems are essential devices designed to absorb the energy and power of a particle beam. Generally, they are classified in three categories depending on their use: particle-producing devices, such as targets; systems for beam cleaning and control, such as collimators or scrapers; and those with safety functions, such as beam dumps or beam stoppers.  Beam-intercepting devices have to withstand enormous mechanical and thermally-induced stresses [...]

Factory Physics: Methods for Efficient Project Management in a Scientific Environment / Spearman, PhD, Mark (speaker) (Factory Physics)
Factory physics is systematic description of the underlying behaviour of manufacturing systems and is key to the development of effective production management strategies.  Operations Science is a generalization of Factory Physics and applies to all operations including large and complex construction projects.  Indeed, the creation of the LHC was one of the largest and most complex operations in history.  Much of the focus in project management has been adherence to a schedule and reacting when the schedule begins to slip.  While schedule adherence is importance the practice of monitor and react is ineffective.  More important is understanding the production system that delivers the construction project.  Operations Science teaches that while schedules tell what should happen, the production system tells what can and will happen—maintain the correct rate and the dates will be met.  To do this, it is essential that the production system be properly designed and efficiently executed.  In this lecture, Mark will describe how Factory Physics and Operations Science address these issues.    Short bio: Mark Spearman joined the Project Production Institute in 2018 as the Technical Director. He is the founder, president and chief executive officer of Factory Physics, Inc [...]

Shaping the future of High-Energy Physics - Theory / Ellis, Richard Keith (speaker) (University of Durham (GB))
These CERN Academic Training Lectures aim at providing a broad scholarly overview of the scientific and technological considerations that led to the recommendations of the European Strategy for particle physics and that motivate now its implementations. The programme consists of three lectures with ample time for discussion, targeting the three main pillars underlying future progress in high-energy physics Academic_Training_Nov: https://cern.zoom.us/j/61858310064?pwd=SkZDMzhYd3dscFBXRzJhd254eGtBUT09

Factory Physics: Methods for Efficient Project Management in a Scientific Environment / Fischer, PE, Gary (speaker) (Factory Physics)
As the architect of Chevron’s major capital project system which was used to guide development and execution of about $500 Billion US dollars of projects, Gary became frustrated with the poor cost and schedule performance of those investments and launched a search for something better.  In his search he discovered Project Production Management based on Factory Physics and Operations Science.  After using PPM to rescue several projects that were years behind schedule and 100’s of millions over budget, he began to implement PPM throughout Chevron.  In this lecture Gary will describe his personal journey that took him beyond those industries that use conventional “best practice” project management methods to focus on how manufacturing industries have realized multi fold increases in productivity over the years and to adapt their underlying principles to complex construction projects in the energy sector. Short bio: Gary Fischer is the Executive Director of the Project Production Institute (PPI), as well as Chair of the PPI Energy Working Group [...]

REMOTE: Federated Data Architectures / de Jong, Michiel (speaker)
Abstract: Lecture 2: Federated Bookkeeping While we often still coordinate trade by settling against a third party currency that is globally trusted, other techniques of coordinating trade are slowly on the rise. Community currencies like the Swiss WIR make use of interpersonal trust relationships to coordinate trade [...]
