The ALICE analysis framework for LHC Run 3 / Berzano, Dario (CERN ; INFN, Italy) ; Deckers, Roel (CERN) ; Grigoras, Costin (CERN) ; Floris, Michele (CERN) ; Hristov, Peter (CERN) ; Krzewicki, Mikolaj (CERN ; Frankfurt U., FIAS ; Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Zimmermann, Markus (CERN)
The ALICE experiment at the LHC (CERN) is currently developing a new software framework designed for Run 3: detector and software will have to cope with Pb–Pb collision rates 100 times higher than today, leading to the combination of core Online-Offline operations into a single framework called O$^2$. The analysis code is expected to run on a few large Analysis Facilities counting 20k cores and sustainin ga 100 GB/s throughput: this requires a conjoint effort between the definition of the data format, the configuration of the Analysis Facilities and the development of the Analysis Framework. Software training for the next generation of physicists: joint experience of LHCb and ALICE / Berzano, Dario (CERN ; INFN, Italy) ; Burr, Chris (U. Manchester (main)) ; Beck, Hans (Unlisted, DE) ; Bellée, Violaine (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Bertens, Redmer Alexander (U. Tennessee, Knoxville) ; Puig Navarro, Albert (U. Zurich (main))
The need for good software training is essential in the HEP community. Unfortunately, current training is non-homogeneous and the definition of a common baseline is unclear, making it difficult for newcomers to proficiently join large collaborations such as ALICE or LHCb. [...]

Grid services in a box: container management in ALICE / Storetvedt, Maxim (HVL, Norway) ; Litmaath, Maarten (CERN) ; Betev, Latchezar (CERN) ; Helstrup, Håvard (HVL, Norway) ; Fanebust Hetland, Kristin (HVL, Norway) ; Kileng, Bjarte (HVL, Norway)
Virtualization and containers are established tools for providing simplified deployment, elasticity and workflow isolation. These benefits are especially advantageous in containers, which dispense with the resource overhead associated with virtual machines in cases where virtualization of the full hardware stack is not considered necessary. Correlations of high-$p_T$ hadrons and jets in ALICE / Krizek, Filip (Rez, Nucl. Phys. Inst.) /ALICE Collaboration
There are two prominent experimental signatures of quark–gluon plasma creation in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions: the jet quenching phenomenon and the azimuthal-momentum space-anisotropy of final-state particle emission. Recently, the latter signature was also observed in lighter collision systems such as p–Pb or pp. [...]

Operational experience with ALICE ITS / Barioglio, Luca (INFN, Turin ; Turin U.) /ALICE Collaboration
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general purpose heavy-ion experiment designed for the study of strongly-interacting matter at the extreme energy densities that characterise Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN LHC, where the formation of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), a deconfined phase of matter, is expected. The innermost detector of ALICE is the Inner Tracking System (ITS). [...]

Recent ALICE results on coherent J/psi photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions / Kryshen, Evgeny (St. Petersburg, INP) /ALICE Collaboration
The strong electromagnetic fields of Pb nuclei, accelerated at the LHC, can be used to measure photon-induced interactions in a new kinematic regime. Photon-induced processes are usually studied in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions where hadronic interactions are strongly suppressed. [...]

Quarkonium measurements at forward rapidity with ALICE at the LHC / Shaikh, Wadut (Saha Inst.)
Heavy quarks are produced at the first instant of a nucleus--nucleus collision and therefore are an important tool to study the subsequent high energy-density medium formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. [...]
