Design, construction, and beam tests of a rotatable collimator prototype for high-intensity and high-energy hadron accelerators / Markiewicz, T (SLAC) ; Bong, E (SLAC) ; Keller, L (SLAC) ; Smith, J (SLAC) ; Aberle, O (CERN) ; Accettura, C (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Berthome, E (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Butcher, M (CERN) et al.
A rotatable-jaw collimator design was conceived as a solution to recover from catastrophic beam impacts which would damage a collimator at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). One such rotatable collimator prototype was designed and built at SLAC and delivered to CERN for tests with LHC-type circulating beams in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). [...]

An exploratory study has been launched at CERN in 2016 aiming at exploiting the full scientific potential of CERN’s accelerator complex and its scientific infrastructure through projects complementary to the LHC, HL-LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects will address possible experiments over the period from 2021 to about 2040. [...]

Resistive wall impedance in elliptical multilayer vacuum chambers / Migliorati, M (U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; INFN, Rome) ; Palumbo, L (U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; INFN, Rome) ; Zannini, C (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Vaccaro, V G (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.)
The resistive wall impedance of a vacuum chamber with elliptic cross section is of particular interest for circular particle accelerators as well as for undulators in free electron lasers. By using the electric field of a point charge and of a small dipole moving at arbitrary speed in an elliptical vacuum chamber, expressed in terms of Mathieu functions, in this paper we take into account the finite conductivity of the beam pipe walls by means of the surface impedance, and evaluate the longitudinal and transverse driving and detuning impedances for any beam velocity. Demonstration of slow extraction loss reduction with the application of octupoles at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Pari, Michelangelo (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco Maria (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda Susanne (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U.)
The powering of octupoles during third-integer resonant slow extraction has been studied and recently tested with the beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in order to increase the extraction efficiency and reduce the induced radioactivity along the extraction straight. The octupoles distort the particle trajectories in phase space in such a way that the extracted separatrix is folded, which decreases the particle density impinging the wires of the extraction septum at the expense of increasing the extracted beam emittance.
