The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) high-energy internal dump (TIDVG) is used to intercept beam dumps from 10².2 to 450 GeV. An inspection in 2013 revealed significant beam induced damage to the aluminium absorbing block, resulting in operational limitations to minimize the risk of reproducing this phenomenon. [...]

Aiming at doubling the beam intensity and reducing the beam emittance [1], significant modifications of the LHC injector chain will take place during Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), starting from 2019. The LIU project (LHC Injector Upgrade) [2], in the specific, touches Linac4, the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), the Proton Synchrotron (PS), the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). [...]

First Beam Test of Laser Engineered Surface Structures (LESS) at Cryogenic Temperature in CERN SPS Accelerator / Salemme, Roberto (CERN ; Euratom, St. Paul Lez Durance) ; Abdolvand, Amin (Dundee U.) ; Baglin, Vincent (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Chiggiato, Paolo (CERN) ; Di Girolamo, Beniamino (CERN) ; Garcia-Tabares Valdivieso, Elisa (CERN) ; Jenninger, Berthold (CERN) ; Prever-Loiri, Laurent (CERN) ; Sitko, Monika (CERN) et al.
Electron cloud mitigation is an essential requirement for accelerators of positive particles with high intensity beams to guarantee beam stability and limited heat load in cryogenic systems. Laser Engineered Surface Structures (LESS) are being considered, within the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC collider at CERN (HL-LHC), as an option to reduce the Secondary Electron Yield (SEY) of the surfaces facing the beam, thus suppressing the electron cloud phenomenon. The future CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) in- ternal dump (Target Internal Dump Vertical Graphite, known as TIDVG#5), has been designed within the frame- work of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project. It will be installed during CERN’s Long Shutdown 2 (2019-2020) and will be built to intercept beam dumps from 14 to 450 GeV. [...]

During the past two decades of research, the ultra-relativistic beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator (PWFA) concept has achieved many significant milestones. These include the demonstration of ultra-high gradient acceleration of electrons over meter-scale plasma accelerator structures, efficient acceleration of a narrow energy spread electron bunch at high-gradients, positron acceleration using wakes in uniform plasmas and in hollow plasma channels, and demonstrating that highly nonlinear wakes in the 'blow-out regime' have the electric field structure necessary for preserving the emittance of the accelerating bunch. AWAKE is a plasma wakefield acceleration experiment using the 12cm-long, 400GeV proton bunch of the CERN SPS. In order to reach an acceleration gradient in the GeV/m range, the plasma electron density is 7$\times$10$^{14}$cm$^{-3}$. [...]

Batch compression to 50 ns spacing at PS flat-top / Damerau, H (CERN)
The bunch spacing in the injector chain has a direct impact on the total number of bunches in the LHC and hence on its integrated luminosity. The baseline scheme for lead ion beams within the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project fore- sees the transfer of multiple batches of four bunches spaced by 100 ns from the PS to the SPS. [...]

Due to the relatively infrequent use of electrostatic beamline elements compared with their magnetic counterparts, there are few particle tracking codes which allow for the straightforward implementation of such beamlines. In this contribution, we present 3D tracking methods for beamlines containing electrostatic elements utilising a modified version of the Geant4 based tracking code 'G4beamline'. [...]
