Lead evaporation instabilities and failure mechanisms of the micro oven at the GTS-LHC ECR ion source at CERN / Kövener, T (CERN ; U. Hamburg (main)) ; Küchler, D (CERN) ; Toivanen, V A (Jyvaskyla U.)
The GTS-LHC ECR ion source (named after the Grenoble Test Source and the Large Hadron Collider) at CERN provides heavy ion beams for the chain of accelerators from Linac3 up to the LHC for high energy collision experiments and to the Super Proton Synchrotron for fixed target experiments. During the standard operation, the oven technique is used to evaporate lead into the source plasma to produce multiple charged lead ion beams. [...]

High energy muon induced radioactive nuclides in nickel plate and its use for 2-D muon-beam image profile / Kurebayashi, Y (Yamagata U.) ; Sakurai, H (Yamagata U.) ; Takahashi, Y (Yamagata U.) ; Doshita, N (Yamagata U.) ; Kikuchi, S (Yamagata U.) ; Tokanai, F (Yamagata U.) ; Horiuchi, K (Hirosaki U.) ; Tajima, Y (Yamagata U.) ; Oe, T (Yamagata U.) ; Sato, T (Yamagata U.) et al.
Target materials were exposed to a muon beam with an energy of 160 GeV/c at the COMPASS experiment line in CERN-SPS to measure the production cross-sections for muon-induced radionuclides. A muon imager containing four nickel plates, each measuring 100 mm×100 mm, exposed to the IP plate successfully detected the muon beam image during an irradiation period of 33 days. [...]

Anomaly detection for the injection kickermagnets of the CERN Large HadronCollider / Dewitte, Thiebout Thomas
Reliability, availability and maintainability are parameters that determine if a large-scale accelerator system can be operated in a sustainable and cost effective manner. Beam transfer equipment such as kicker systems are critical components with potential significant impact on the global performance of the entire machine complex [...]

Improvement of the CERN SPS electrostatic septa ion traps / Balhan, B (CERN) ; Barlow, R A (CERN) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Raffaele, G (Bari Polytechnic)
At CERN, the SPS synchrotron is equipped with a slow extraction channel towards the fixed target beam lines in the North Area This channel includes five consecutive electrostatic septa, where the field free region and the active high field region are separated by an array of tungsten-rhenium wires. The field-free region provides for the circulating beam, while the high field region is used to deflect the extracted beam. [...]

Reduction of 400  GeV/c slow extraction beam loss with a wire diffuser at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew Alexander (CERN) ; Jorat, Louise (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Lolliot, Christophe (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda Susan (CERN) ; van Trappen, Pieter (CERN) et al.
Slow extraction of a quasicontinuous flux of high-energy protons is an important requirement for many high-energy physics experiments. This extraction type is associated with an unavoidable beam loss due to scattering on the thin septum element. [...]

Proton-Beam-Driven Plasma Acceleration / Adli, Erik (Oslo U.) ; Muggli, Patric (Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
We describe the main ideas, promises and challenges related to proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. Existing high-energy proton beams have the potential to accelerate electron beams to the TeV scale in a single plasma stage. [...]

Electron cloud effects have become one of the main performance limitations for circular particle accelerators operating with positively-charged beams. Among other machines worldwide, the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), as well as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are affected by these phenomena. [...]
