Beyond repositories: enabling actionable FAIR open data reuse services in particle physics / Rodriguez Rodriguez, Diego (CERN) ; Simko, Tibor (CERN) ; Dallmeier-Tiessen, Sunje (CERN) ; Feger, Sebastian Stefan (Universitaet Stuttgart (DE)) ; Fokianos, Pamfilos (CERN) ; Kousidis, Konstantinos ; Lavasa, Artemis (CERN) ; Maciulaitis, Rokas (Ministere des affaires etrangeres et europeennes (FR)) ; Okraska, Jan (University of Warsaw (PL)) ; Trzcinska, Anna (CERN) et al.
We describe experiences from building and operating the CERN Open Data repository platform that manages and disseminates more than one petabyte of open data from particle physics. We discuss the education and research use cases of the platform and we argue that in order to make the FAIR open data fully actionable and reusable by a variety of users, the research data repositories should evolve from focusing on resource-hosting present towards integrated service-provisioning future. CERN’s Digital Memory: When Patrimony Data meets Scientific Data / Le Meur, Jean-Yves (CERN)
Since 1954, the European Organization for Nuclear Physics (CERN) has developed and exploited accelerator technologies to run fundamental research on high-energy particles. Punctuated by the discovery of new particles and the invention of the World Wide Web, the last 65 years have seen an explosion in the amount of data captured, whether scientific datasets or multimedia documentary. [...]

Sharing server nodes for storage and compute Batch on EOS Extra Resources / Schulz, Markus (CERN) ; Jones, Ben (CERN) ; Kiryanov, Andrey (Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (RU)) ; Lamanna, Massimo (CERN) ; Mascetti, Luca (CERN) ; McCance, Gavin (CERN) ; Rousseau, Herve (CERN) ; Smith, David (CERN) ; Tollefsen, Havard (Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) (NO))
Based on the observation of low average CPU utilisation of several hundred disk servers in the EOS storage system at CERN, the Batch on EOS Extra Resources (BEER) project developed an approach to utilise these resources for batch processing. After initial proof of concept tests, showing almost no interference between the batch and storage services, a model for production has been developed and implemented. [...]

When bad archiving results in good art. / Le Meur, Jean-Yves (CERN) ; Volpi, Matteo (University of Melbourne (AU))
A collaboration involving time, nature and slide copies has taken place in the European Organization for particle physics (CERN) between the construction of its Large Electron-Positron Collider in 1985 up to 2017. If CERN is famous for the recent discovery of the Higgs Boson, its quest for the infinity small is also a source of inspiration for many artists - including mold. [...]

Trident: Automated system tool for collecting and analyzing hardware performance counters / Muralidharan, Servesh (CERN) ; Smith, David (CERN)
Trident, a tool to use low level metrics derived from hardware counters to understand Core, Memory and I/O utilisation and bottlenecks. The collection of time series of these low level counters does not induce significant overhead to the execution of the application. [...]
