The LHC collimation system, which protects the LHC hardware from undesired beam loss, is less efficient with heavy-ion beams than with proton beams due to fragmentation into other nuclides inside the LHC collimators. Recently, the FLUKA–SIXTRACK coupling has been set up to simulate with great detail the performance of cleaning systems in circular, ultra-relativistic accelerators. In a coupled simulation, the two codes run simultaneously while exchanging particle information; SIXTRACK tracks the beam through the accelerator lattice, whereas FLUKA simulates the interaction of the tracked beam with intercepting devices.
