Beam-Background Tests with TOTEM Roman Pot Detectors at the LHC Injection Energy / Kašpar, Jan (CERN ; Prague, Inst. Phys.) /TOTEM With the aim of measuring the total cross-section and the $\rho$ parameter, TOTEM has performed tests of beam conditions at the LHC injection energy of $\sqrt{s} = 900$ GeV. The tests have revealed complications in setting up the LHC collimators to minimise the background observed in the Roman Pot (RP) detectors, summarised in this article. Impact of Thermal and Intermediate Energy Neutrons on SRAM SEE Rates in the LHC Accelerator / Cecchetto, M (CERN ; U. Padua (main)) ; García Alía, R (CERN) ; Gerardin, S (U. Padua (main)) ; Brugger, M (CERN) ; Infantino, A (CERN) ; Danzeca, S (CERN) This paper summarizes the main results related to the single event upset and single event latch-up cross section measurements performed at CHARM in a location with a strong contribution from thermal and intermediate energy neutrons. We introduce a new experimental procedure to unfold the thermal and high-energy hadron contributions to the single event effect rate in the mixed-field environment and benchmark the result against those obtained in standard test facilities, highlighting the possible implications on the state-of-the-art component qualification.. 2018 - 7 p. - Published in : IEEE Trans. Irreversible degradation of Nb$_3$Sn Rutherford cables due to transverse compressive stress at room temperature / Ebermann, Patrick (CERN ; Vienna, Tech. U., Atominst.) ; Bernardi, Johannes (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Fleiter, Jerome (CERN) ; Lackner, Friedrich (CERN) ; Meuter, Florian (CERN) ; Pieler, Magdalena (Vienna, Tech. U.) ; Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Schoerling, Daniel (CERN) ; Wolf, Felix (CERN ; T.U. Bergakademie Freiberg) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) et al. In the framework of the Future Circular Collider design study for a 100 TeV circular collider, 16 T superconducting bending magnets based on Nb$_3$Sn technology are being developed. A pre-stress on the conductor during magnet assembly at room temperature (RT) is needed to counteract the Lorentz forces during operation. [...] 2018 - 10 p. - Published in : Supercond. Sci. Powering of an HTS dipole insert-magnet operated standalone in helium gas between 5 and 85 K / Van Nugteren, J (CERN) ; Kirby, G (CERN) ; Bajas, H (CERN) ; Bajko, M (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Chiuchiolo, A (CERN) ; Contat, P-A (CERN) ; Dhallé, M (Twente U., Enschede) ; Durante, M (Saclay) et al. This paper describes the standalone magnet cold testing of the high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet Feather-M2.1-2. This magnet was constructed within the European funded FP7-EUCARD2 collaboration to test a Roebel type HTS cable, and is one of the first high temperature superconducting dipole magnets in the world. Method for thermal and structural evaluation of shallow intense-beam deposition in matter / Pilan Zanoni, André (CERN) The projected range of high-intensity proton and heavy-ion beams at energies below a few tens of MeV/A in matter can be as short as a few micrometers. For the evaluation of temperature and stresses from a shallow beam energy deposition in matter conventional numerical 3D models require minuscule element sizes for acceptable element aspect ratio as well as extremely short time steps for numerical convergence. Physics at the SPS / Gatignon, L (CERN) The CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) has delivered a variety of beams to a vigorous fixed target physics program since 1978. In this paper, we restrict ourselves to the description of a few illustrative examples in the ongoing physics program at the SPS. [...] 2018 - 6 p. - Published in : Rev. Sci. A UVM simulation environment for the study, optimization and verification of HL-LHC digital pixel readout chips / Marconi, Sara (CERN ; Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Conti, E (CERN) ; Christiansen, J (CERN) ; Placidi, P (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) The operating conditions of the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider are very demanding for the design of next generation hybrid pixel readout chips in terms of particle rate, radiation level and data bandwidth. To this purpose, the RD53 Collaboration has developed for the ATLAS and CMS experiments a dedicated simulation and verification environment using industry-consolidated tools and methodologies, such as SystemVerilog and the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM). Investigation of neutron interactions with Ge detectors / Baginova, Miloslava (CERN ; Comenius U.) ; Vojtyla, Pavol (CERN) ; Povinec, Pavel P (Comenius U.) Interactions of neutrons with a high-purity germanium detector were studied experimentally and by simulations using the GEANT4 tool. Elastic and inelastic scattering of fast neutrons as well as neutron capture on Ge nuclei were observed. [...] 2018 - 10 p. - Published in : Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Phys. Lab) ; Marin, Antonio (CERN) ; Chérif, Ahmed (CERN) ; Schneider, Jürgen (Hexagon Metrology, Wetzlar) ; Mainaud-Durand, Hélène (CERN) ; Shore, Paul (Teddington, Natl. Phys. Lab) ; Steffens, Norbert (Hexagon Metrology, Wetzlar) The accurate characterisation of a copper–beryllium wire with a diameter of 0.1 mm is one of the steps to increase the precision of future accelerators’ pre-alignment. Novelties in measuring the wire properties were found in order to overcome the difficulties brought by its small size. [...] 2018 - 6 p. - Published in : Meas. Sci. Neutron diffraction measurements on a reference metallic sample with a high-efficiency GEM side-on $^{10}$B-based thermal neutron detector / Pietropaolo, A (ENEA, Frascati) ; Claps, G (ENEA, Frascati) ; Fedrigo, A (Rutherford) ; Grazzi, F (IFAC, Florence) ; Höglund, C (ESS, Lund ; Linkoping U.) ; Murtas, F (Frascati ; CERN) ; Scherillo, A (Rutherford) ; Schmidt, S (ESS, Lund ; IHI Ionbond AG, Olten) ; Schooneveld, E M (Rutherford) The upgraded version of the GEM side-on thermal neutron detector was successfully tested in a neutron diffraction experiment on a reference sample using the INES diffractometer at the ISIS spallation neutron source, UK. The performance of the new $^{10}$B$_4$C-based detector is compared to that of a standard $^3$He tube, operating at the instrument as a part of the detectors assembly.
