ABOUT ACADEMIC TRAINING
The Academic Training Lectures take place from September to June and to provide CERN members - any contract type - with opportunities to deepen and broaden their academic knowledge. The candidate Abstracts are voted by the whole CERN community every year in May.
The Library has a collection of all the handouts since the start of the program in 1961. Most lectures from 1990 onwards have also been recorded. Since 2018 we can upload selected lectures in a dedicated YouTube playlist.

Factory Physics: Methods for Efficient Project Management in a Scientific Environment / Spearman, PhD, Mark (speaker) (Factory Physics)
Factory physics is systematic description of the underlying behaviour of manufacturing systems and is key to the development of effective production management strategies.  Operations Science is a generalization of Factory Physics and applies to all operations including large and complex construction projects.  Indeed, the creation of the LHC was one of the largest and most complex operations in history.  Much of the focus in project management has been adherence to a schedule and reacting when the schedule begins to slip.  While schedule adherence is importance the practice of monitor and react is ineffective.  More important is understanding the production system that delivers the construction project.  Operations Science teaches that while schedules tell what should happen, the production system tells what can and will happen—maintain the correct rate and the dates will be met.  To do this, it is essential that the production system be properly designed and efficiently executed.  In this lecture, Mark will describe how Factory Physics and Operations Science address these issues.    Short bio: Mark Spearman joined the Project Production Institute in 2018 as the Technical Director. Factory Physics: Methods for Efficient Project Management in a Scientific Environment / Fischer, PE, Gary (speaker) (Factory Physics)
As the architect of Chevron’s major capital project system which was used to guide development and execution of about $500 Billion US dollars of projects, Gary became frustrated with the poor cost and schedule performance of those investments and launched a search for something better.  In his search he discovered Project Production Management based on Factory Physics and Operations Science.  After using PPM to rescue several projects that were years behind schedule and 100’s of millions over budget, he began to implement PPM throughout Chevron.  In this lecture Gary will describe his personal journey that took him beyond those industries that use conventional “best practice” project management methods to focus on how manufacturing industries have realized multi fold increases in productivity over the years and to adapt their underlying principles to complex construction projects in the energy sector.
