CERN Accelerating science

ABOUT ACADEMIC TRAINING
The Academic Training Lectures take place from September to June and to provide CERN members - any contract type - with opportunities to deepen and broaden their academic knowledge. The candidate Abstracts are voted by the whole CERN community every year in May.
The Library has a collection of all the handouts since the start of the program in 1961. Most lectures from 1990 onwards have also been recorded. Since 2018 we can upload selected lectures in a dedicated YouTube playlist.

An Introduction to Go: Why and how to write good Go code / Campoy, Francesc (speaker) (source{d}, San Francisco, USA)
Go has recently hit its 1.10 release and recently celebrated its seventh anniversary as an open source project. During these years Go has become the language of the cloud and it has been adopted by companies and projects across the world, from Google to Microsoft and Apple, and is an essential part of the cloud as it powers Docker and Kubernetes. We will cover why the language was created, the key features that distinguish it from other languages, and how to write code that uses them correctly. We will also focus on the tooling around the language, which is a key factor on its success.   BIO: Francesc Campoy Flores is the VP of Developer Relations at source{d}, a startup applying ML to source code and building the platform for the future of developer tooling. Accelerators for Medicine / Vretenar, Maurizio (speaker) (CERN)
This lecture will review the different applications of particle accelerators to the medical field, from cancer treatment with beams of accelerator-produced particles (photons, electrons, protons, ions and neutrons) to the generation of radioactive isotopes used in medical diagnostics, in cancer therapy and in the new domain of theragnostics. For each application will be outlined the state of the art, the potential, and the accelerator challenges to be faced to meet the increasing demand for therapeutic procedures based on accelerators.

A critical analysis of the "keep everything" Big Data era, the impact on our lives of the information, at first glance "convenient for future use" that we make known about ourselves on the network. NB! The lecture will be recorded like all Academic Training lectures [...]

Statistics for High Energy Physics / Gross, Eilam (speaker) (Weizmann Institute of Science (IL))
The lectures emphasize the frequentist approach used for Dark Matter search and the Higgs search, discovery and measurements of its properties. An emphasis is put on hypothesis test using the asymptotic formulae formalism and its derivation, and on the derivation of the trial factor formulae in one and two dimensions. Various test statistics and their applications are discussed.  Some keywords: Profile Likelihood, Neyman Pearson, Feldman Cousins, Coverage, CLs. [...]
